Flaring Horse A Metal Horse Sculpture in Motion
Flaring Horse is a bronze edition metal horse sculpture, standing 60cm tall and cast as a limited edition of nine.
The sculpture is about movement, power, and energy a moment captured mid-action, where the horse’s nostrils flare as it works hard, pushing forward with intent.
Rather than depicting a calm or static pose, this piece focuses on the raw physicality of a horse in motion. It’s a snapshot of effort the split second where strength, breath, and purpose collide.
From Recycled Car Panels to Bronze
The original version of Flaring Horse was sculpted entirely from recycled car body panels. That choice was intentional. Horses were once at the heart of transport, industry, and progress long before engines replaced them. Using car panels became a quiet homage to that history, drawing a line between horsepower of the past and horsepower of the present.
By shaping industrial materials into an organic, living form, the sculpture bridges two eras: mechanical progress and animal power.
The bronze edition was created to capture this form in a more traditional sculptural material, allowing the movement and surface to be held in a timeless way.
Capturing Action Rather Than Anatomy
This sculpture isn’t about anatomical accuracy. It’s about action.
The flared nostrils, open mouth, and fragmented planes are designed to suggest exertion and breath the physical reality of a horse in work. There’s tension in the form, but also flow, with each curve pushing the eye forward.
I was influenced by Renaissance paintings of horses in motion works where artists weren’t afraid to exaggerate energy and drama to convey life and momentum.
Industrial Material, Organic Form
Although cast in bronze, the sculpture retains the spirit of its industrial origins. The surface feels worked rather than polished, allowing light to move across it and change throughout the day.
This balance industrial softened into organic is central to my practice. It reflects how something strong and functional can still carry emotion, grace, and presence.
Sculpted in the Yorkshire Landscape
This photograph was taken in the Yorkshire countryside, in a familiar open field. Photographing the piece outdoors allows the sculpture’s silhouette and movement to read clearly against space and light.
The surrounding land echoes the sculpture’s origins grounded, physical, and connected to working history.
